THE OPPORTUNITY
Zalando is transforming from an e-commerce company into a multi-service platform that provides fashion as a service. We make it our mission to imagine and predict the infinite points of interaction between fashion and people - and develop the technology to make them possible. The 1,800+ members of Zalando Technology across our offices in Germany, Ireland, Finland and Portugal build most of our 40+ platform products in-house and open source - from Smart Logistics to Brand Solutions to Payments and Warehouse Management.
Visibility is an area within a central function called Platform Infrastructure. The purpose of Platform Infrastructure is to provide frameworks, tools, services and environments for Zalando’s software teams to develop, deploy, and operate their software. We offer productivity, quality, security, compliance, observability, reliability, scalability, and cost efficiency by design. In Visibility we create an important part of the safety net around Zalando services. With our infrastructure, tooling and support more than 200 engineering teams can easily observe the behaviour and performance indicators of their applications and infrastructure, detect incidents, alert on certain conditions and conduct root cause analysis of incidents.
We are looking for a Backend Specialist with a knack for solving hard problems and storing and querying metrics data to complement the Visibility team, improve the solutions that we currently offer and build the next evolution of our observability toolsuite with accessibility at its core. You create new value and you preserve what is already valuable.
You will work with a group of highly motivated and talented engineers solving complex monitoring and observability challenges across diverse environments (Kubernetes, AWS, data centers). We work with a modern technology stack comprised of AWS, Kubernetes, REST APIs, Java, JavaScript, Python, PostgreSQL, Cassandra, KairosDB, Docker amongst others - check our Tech Radar for more information on the technologies we use. The right candidate is passionate about backend technology, cares about user experience and is interested in monitoring and observability - distributed tracing in particular (OpenTracing, OpenCensus).

Check our Tech Radar for more information on the technologies we use.
- Frontend affine. You bring an interest for frontend technology, UI concepts and care about user experience and performance of your app end to end.
- DevOps. You are experienced in deploying and operating your application in Cloud infrastructure. You care about logging, monitoring (metrics and event based), automated tests and fast delivery.
