This unique position seeks an individual who would like to be involved in clinical research that will make an impact on patients’ health and also an impact on our large health care systems. We seek an individual who is able to communicate with Dr. Joanne Elmore’s multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, statisticians, social scientists and computer scientists. Increasingly large amounts of data are now stored within electronic health records such as “EPIC”, and our research team seeks to use these data to improve health and transform health care. We will help train the right individual in understanding the structure and content of the EPIC electronic health record so that this individual will be able to identify and analyze these data to address clinically relevant and important research questions. We seek not just a computer programmer, but a member of our research team.
Using data extracted from EPIC, the largest electronic medical record system and other sources, this individual will design, develop, and document analytic data files for use in the research program. This individual will also design, develop, and execute analytic plans using statistical software to complete research projects. This individual will have a strong voice within the team and be an active member.
Job Duties:
- Gather requirements, document, clarify, interpret specifications and review for completeness and accuracy.
- Identify sources and structures of data items.
- Identify best methods for communication and collaboration serving as the intermediary between the research groups.
- Generate tables, figures, and reports in collaboration with investigators.
- Identify appropriate statistical methods to address specific research questions.
- Provide detailed documentation including the writing of manuscript sections that describe the data products that are generated.
- Review analysis plan and statistical issues for content, determine the best implementation approach.
- Evaluate, anticipate and communicate any issues, and recommend ways to mitigate problems.
- Monitor performance of analysis plans and outputs and take corrective action to optimize or improve the performance when necessary.
- Participate in application, validation and quality analysis efforts as they pertain to data, metrics, and analytics solutions creation and execution.
- Manage data and models for multiple research projects.
- Manage the data inventory and assure that data and analysis are meaningful, standardized, complete, accurate, and up to date.
- Using best practices from Data Modeling, design and develop objects in a manner that is in concert with the project framework.
- Work closely and collaboratively with all research teams and collaborators to assure accurate identification of key data elements and efficient methods for data extraction into analysis files.
- Keeps track of assigned tasks and consistently provides weekly project deliverable status updates.
- Maintain consistency in the completion and delivery of weekly time tracking spreadsheet.
- Maintain a high level of professionalism and be prompt in attendance of meetings.
- Adequately prepared for meetings – materials have been adequately prepared, presentation is clear, concise and professional.
- Maintain a good work ethic, exhibits attitude of respect and integrity toward others.
- Manage personal work assignments and priorities.
- Communicate clearly and foster good relationship and partnership and provide input and support to other team members.
- Work closely and collaboratively with research team members and other stakeholders to ensure the right reporting and analysis tools are used.

- Complete tasks with quality and within the expected timeframe.
- Follow through and follow up on tasks or requests (from end to end).
- Fully support and champion UC Health Systems electronic health record data
- Bachelor’s degree in health-related or programming/statistics related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Masters or higher level degree preferred.
- 2+ years of experience in a healthcare related organization or as a medical researcher
- 2+ years of previous experience in statistical computing/ programming for large collaborative health-related research projects
- 2+ years of previous experience in statistical programming language such as R, Python, SAS, etc.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and metadata skills
- Ability to translate business questions and requirements into reports, views, and BI query objects
- Experience in gathering, documenting, prioritizing and tracking requirements
- Strong organizational skills and customer service orientation
- Must recognize and evaluate problems, and refer to the appropriate channels for action
- High functioning team skills, including active listening and rapport building
- Effective written & verbal communication
- Ability to communicate with stakeholders at all levels to understand requirements
- Ability to identify, document, resolve and/or escalate issues and maintain a complete issues log
- Ability to accurately and precisely estimate development time
- Ability to manage multiple and competing tasks while maintain timelines
- Ability to work independently with general direction

- Epic Clarity Model Certification or the ability to achieve EPIC Clarity Model Certification within 6 months of onboarding
- Experience in Epic Clarity Data Models or other EHR databases (preferred)
- Strong SQL Programming Skills (MS SQL Server/Oracle platforms) – preferred
- Experience with building visualizations using software such as Tableau (preferred)
