We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Systems Administrator to join the Cloud and Virtualization team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI). Located within a beautiful rural research campus in Hinxton, near Cambridge, EMBL-EBI offers a unique opportunity to acquire professional experience in an international scientific environment with access to a wide range of cutting edge technologies.
The Cloud and Virtualization team creates, develops and maintains EMBL-EBI’s cloud infrastructure and virtualization platforms in OpenStack and VMware. These platforms support over 2500 virtual machines across two data centres that provide EMBL-EBI’s public web services, host the Embassy Cloud for external collaborative use and provide a CaaS platform based on Kubernetes to orchestrate Docker containers.
EMBL-EBI continues to actively explore the benefits that Cloud technologies could bring to the operation of its own infrastructure and the use of infrastructure by our own leading researchers and their world-wide collaborators.
The EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and is Europe's leading provider of information services to biological researchers in academia and industry.
The successful candidate will have a degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience and will possess strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills. They will have extensive experience of Linux administration (ideally Red Hat Enterprise and Ubuntu). Developing and operating a cloud environment and/or virtual infrastructure would be a distinct advantage as would networking skills.
In addition the post-holder will require as many of the following as possible:
The candidate will have excellent English and communication skills and be able to work well within a team. Being user focused is very important as the role will often include interacting with internal and external users by answering queries and developing documentation.
