uSwitch is the largest energy comparison company in the UK. We help hundreds of thousands of customers each year to better understand and reduce one of their largest household costs. Our free and impartial service saves customers an average of £482 per year, which for some people means no longer having to choose between heating their home and feeding their family.
What’s happening?
The UK energy market is changing rapidly. Where there was once 6 big suppliers with little competition, there are now over 70 suppliers with relentless competition through pricing, regional availability and other bespoke offerings. Adding the opportunities and challenges presented by smart metering, price caps and faster switching, it’s never been more important for uSwitch to continue to be the leading consumer advocate and to help customers take control of their energy.
What’s the opportunity?
The energy supplier services team enables uSwitch to send and receive data from energy suppliers. To do this we operate in autonomous teams, responsible for pragmatically choosing the right tools to suit our problems. We currently maintain a core set of Clojure and Ruby applications, but languages in use across the business include Node, Go and Elixir. We operate without QA teams and project managers in favour of owning the problem end-to-end and being able to make decisions quickly. With an ever-more complex supplier landscape, the central question we are addressing is how do we adapt and reimagine our systems to support consumers and enable the best possible switching experience?
