Distinguished Engineer, Large-scale Services DevOps at inline ltd. (Zhongzheng District, Taiwan)

inline is a developer platform used by restaurants, and food-focused software companies. Imagine OpenTable or Yelp, minus the apps for patrons (we leave that to our partners).

Over 3M patrons have grabbed a spot in line, or booked a reservation through inline and our partner's apps. Most of our growth has been through viral b2b distribution and our churn is under 1% life to date; restaurants love inline.

We’re looking for a talented and collaborative distinguished server software developer that will really influence how the team grows, and how the inline services are scaled and iterated.

This is a role for a developer who has been a lead or a key contributor to at least one service, and more likely services, that have scaled to several AZs and several regions within AWS or GCP, serving users in multiple regions of the world. And this role is for someone who is ready for some life experience living and working around Asia for a period of time.

Responsibilities:

  • Performance & Availability

    • Performance monitoring for the services powering inline's restaurant customers, partner apps, and internal inline operations.

    • Evaluating performance issues as they arise and implementing solutions.

    • Availability monitoring for the services powering inline's restaurant customers, partner apps, and internal inline operations.

    • Establishing low-availability incident response plans for agreed scenarios, and executing responses when the time comes.

  • Security

    • Security monitoring for the inline services, including establishing a regular cycle of broad and deep coverage of code and hosting environments.

    • Establishing security responses plans for agreed scenarios, and executing responses when the time comes.

  • Functional Validation

    • Increasing coverage of useful, actionable automated tests across the inline services stack for core operations

    • Special focus on automating useful, actionable test validation of the partner-facing inline APIs

  • Development

    • Build the most respected developer-focused restaurant operations platform in the world

    • Regular code review with peers on inline services and clients

    • Author internal and external documentation of inline's services

  • Hosting

    • Grow the scale of the inline services as the workloads increase 100x+

    • Build and maintain deployment toolchains for automated deployment

    • Monitor spending on each service within each hosting environment

Your Background:

  • Spending Money on Hosting & Tools

    • You're already acclimated to spending money on hosting and tools and keeping an eye on operational cost metrics (we'll ask up front roughly how much you've spent per month in total on hosting, presumably it's multiples of your salary if you've been running a scaled service)

  • Tools & Platforms

    • You've been running production workloads on AWS for a bare minimum of 5+ years

      • GCP experience is also very valuable, in conjunction with AWS experience

    • You've got years of experience with deployment tools like CloudFormation, Chef or Puppet, or perhaps Vagrant

      • Note: Docker experience would be sweet, but if you only have Docker experience then you'll have a lot to catch up on, and we're looking for someone who has seen in devOps since before Docker began building momentum

    • Open source/open software background: Linux NodeJS, (if you have Microsoft, Oracle, etc experience from long ago, great....but your recent production experience needs to be with Linux-based services in order to fit within the inline culture and business)

      • NodeJS, or other server-side environments using JavaScript, are a must

      • Github, with PRs and peer code review

    • You have experience developing and running a Pub-Sub based production service, either implemented at a mid-level like MQTT/socket.io, or using hosted pub-sub service

With our latest round of funding, our team is expanding to several countries in Asia. We’re not in the US yet, but hope to launch there soon. This role will start in Taipei, and could remain there or move after 18+ months. Relocation is available. If you haven't visited Taiwan before, imagine Maui - but bigger, denser, and full of tech companies.
