VP of Engineering at Stack Overflow (New York, NY)

At Stack Overflow, our mission is to serve developers. Whether we’re helping developers get answers to their questions, or find new jobs, we build products that affect millions of developers’ lives every day. Our goal is to create a community and a company where every developer feels welcome to learn, share their knowledge, and build their careers. We’re not there yet, which is why we’re hoping you can join us and help!

We’re looking for an experienced manager with a servant leadership mindset to take on running our engineering team. Reporting to the CTO, you’ll manage a diverse group of developers, site reliability engineers, and IT staff as an active servant leader. You’ll make sure that everyone in engineering has the skills, direction, and information they need to build great products, and you’ll work to build a diverse team and inclusive culture that brings out the best in everyone.

We’re a remote-first team, but this position will be based in New York. Even working from the office, you’ll be part of a remote-first work culture that emphasizes online communication (Trello, Slack, GitHub, Hangouts). You’ll work with people all over the world, so solid remote working skills are required.

What we’re looking for:

  • Senior Management Experience: You’re an experienced senior engineering manager (3+ years in a manager-of-managers role over a team of 20+) with experience in a fast-moving product organization. You have a servant-leadership approach to management, and value coaching and developing the people on your team.

  • Gets-Things-Done Engineering Background: You started as an engineer, and worked your way up. It may be a few years since you’ve been on the front lines, but you still have a pragmatic attitude to technology and know how to take on big projects and get them done.

  • Cross-functional Product Experience: You have experience working across functions to ship products. You’ve worked with teams from product management, design, marketing, sales, customer support, and know how to collaborate with them to get products out the door.

  • Collaborative and Inclusive: You’re passionate about creating an inclusive and collaborative culture. You help build understanding and empathy within your team, and actively work to bring people into the conversation and understand their viewpoint. You’re skilled at helping translate between engineering and other teams and comfortable working across the entire organization.

What you’ll do:

  • Manage our entire engineering organization of 50+, including Dev, SRE, and IT. You’ll directly manage and mentor the team of managers, and grow the team as needed.

  • Guide the engineering team to deliver great work. Make sure we have the right people working on projects, that engineering specs and schedules are sound, and that we are on track to meet our goals.

  • Improve reliability & consistency by improving internal engineering processes and tools. Work with adjacent teams like Product Management, Marketing, and Customer Support to improve communication and processes between teams.

  • Shape overall company strategy and direction as a member of the executive team.

  • Advocate for your team and ensure they have everything they need to do their jobs.

What we value:

  • Servant Leadership: The best managers lead by empowering and inspiring their team to do their best work.

  • Collaboration: The best products are created when people from different backgrounds and disciplines work closely together in an environment of respect and trust.

  • Transparency: Trust is built on openness and transparency. If there is not a good reason to keep it a secret, we share it. For example, we share our complete engineering salary formula.

  • Inclusion: We do our best work when we can be our whole selves at work. We’re committed to policies and benefits that support people, and managers who foster an open and inclusive culture.

What you’ll get in return:

  • Flexible hours and the ability to work partially remotely

  • 20 days paid vacation + holidays

  • Completely free health insurance - no copay, no premiums (US residents)

  • Generous parental leave (10-16 weeks at 100% pay), family care leave, and unlimited sick days

  • A private office and free lunch every day by our in-house chefs

  • Employees will never be poked with a sharp stick
