Software Engineering Manager - Toronto, Ontario at Ultimate Software (New York, NY)

Are you a Technology Leader that is excited about building and leading a high performing Software Engineering team? We are looking for an Engineering Team Owner who is passionate about the development of engineers, team building, programming, quality, process improvement and truly enjoys what they do.


Ultimate Software works in an agile environment with daily standups via self-managed cross functional teams. The ability to communicate effectively with Software Engineers, Product Analysts, QAs, PMs, ERMs, CSMs, AMs as well as work closely with other key partners are key components for success in this position.


Primary/Essential Duties and Key Responsibilities:



  • Facilitate productive and positive team communication and collaboration. This includes but is not limited to: Cultivating an environment of visibility and open discussion, resource planning and partnering with other leaders and direct reports.

  • Mentor and support the professional, technical and personal growth of team members. Help develop their career path by assigning projects tailored to their strengths and opportunities, personality, work style and goals while reassuring a healthy exploration beyond their “comfort zone”.

  • Own team processes to increase efficiency. Develop, measure and interpret statistics that serve as indicators of team performance. Use this information to drive continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Deliver simple and elegant solutions in the team portfolio based on agreed upon timelines and commitments while building an environment conducive to high team morale and productivity.

  • Set the example and expectations for team conduct. Inspire positive behavior and interactions. When needed, directly address, and resolve, behavior that falls below expectations.

  • Expedite project timelines while maintaining sustainable work pace that does not compromise on standards and quality.


Required Qualifications:



  • Passionate about people, process, and technologies and able to inspire and motivate others.

  • Experience setting and achieving sound goals.

  • Ability to build and maintain positive and productive relationships with a diverse array of partners and groups in the organization.

  • Strong work ethic with a sense of ownership, urgency, and drive and an unwavering dedication to do the right thing.

  • Validated leadership in facilitating complex discussions to achieve goals and tackle problems. Validated analytical and decision-making skills.

  • Experience in Lean-Agile development methodologies such as Kanban or Scrum.

  • Experience working in an enterprise-scale SaaS production environment.

  • University degree in Computer Science, Engineering or Management. Equivalent experience related to the requirements above also considered.


Travel Requirements:



  • 20-30% travel in the first 1-6 months, and then 10-15% travel thereafter expected managing remote teams.

Typical Interview Process:



  • If your application is selected, a Talent Acquisition Manager will reach out to schedule a phone screen with them.

  • If selected to move forward, you may be chosen to complete a HackerRank Coding Assessment.

  • If you pass, you will either move forward to a technical phone call for an additional screening, OR directly to an onsite interview.
